Meeting Minutes October 21, 2019 - 5:00 pm at Conference Room I. Call to Order: Commenced 5:01 p.m. Members Present: Principal Chad Okamoto, Vice Principal Kimberly Tanaka,, Chairperson Emi George, Kristen Stafford, April Gragas, Lisa Toyomura, Scott Ibara, Rachel Shin, Shary Gist, Rhonda Fosbinder, Julian S. (Lighthouse member) Excused: Vice Principal Grace Mary Romias, Jessica Zaikoski New Student Lighthouse Representative Julian S. was introduced II. Approval of Minutes September 16, 2019, Approved by unanimous vote III. Old Business A. SCC Survey not yet available. B. Strive HI Report explained by Mr. Okamoto. Copy of report attached. Performance based on test scores, shows comparisons to state and complex area, as well as subgroups. Council member asked about the relatively lower science scores. Mr. Okamoto advised that at the time of the survey, there was no specific science curriculum however the school is working on a curriculum to meet the standards. C. Virtual Community Meeting discussed. Mr. Okamato recorded a video to share the same data shared with the SCC, and is going to add additional “perception” data. Video is 5-10 minutes long. Council member proposes to include a notice in the newsletter that interested persons may use a school computer to view the Virtual Community Meeting video. Second meeting will be scheduled as a standard in-person meeting. IV. New Business A. Exception and Waiver dates discussed. August 4, 2020 and October 2, 2020 are Waiver dates for entire Complex. Pu’u Kukui’s additional Waiver dates are February 5, 2020, for student led conferences, and March 8, 2020, for a teacher development day. Intent is to seek a 5-year waiver exception however the exact dates for each of the additional years would have to be determined. Motion made and seconded to set 2020 waiver/exception dates to request; motion unanimously approved. B. No Lighthouse Report at this time, representative newly elected. C. There was no public testimony. V. Discuss Agenda for Next Meeting Chairperson to prepare next agenda. VI. Meeting Minutes August 19, 2019 - 5:00 pm at Conference Room Commenced 5:00 p.m. Approval of Minutes from May 20, 2019, meeting - deferred I. Introduction and Role Groups Call to Order at 5:00 PM. Member information sheets completed and signed. Binders provided to members by Chad Okamoto. Page 4, “Roles and Functions” reviewed. Members Present: Principal Chad Okamoto, Vice Principal Kimberly Tanaka, Vice Principal Grace Mary Romias, Emi George, Scott Ibara, April Gragas, Rachel Shin, Jessica Zaikoski, Rhonda Fosbinder, Lisa Toyomura, and visitor Janet Chou Excused: Kristen Stafford, Shary Gist II. Review of School Community Council purpose & actions (binder) Discussion as to whether to amend bylaws to allow more than eight (8) members, pros and cons; determined that there is no existing rule prohibiting greater than eight (8) members. Chad advised that last year the school received the highest available WASC accreditation. This year the school will be reviewed for “Lighthouse Status” by the Covey Institute, a less intensive process but still rigorous and important to the school. Reviewed the SCC “Activities Checklist and Timeline” contained in the School Community Council Handbook IV. III. Election of SCC Officers Discussion held and vote to elect officers was made. Vote conducted by motion. Results are Chairperson: Emi George; Vice-Chair Person: Lisa Toyomura; Secretary: Rhonda Fosbinder IV. New STEAM Initiative Explanation by Chad Okamoto concerning how the Student Led Service Projects will incorporate elements of NGSS Science, Leadership and TEAM. Each grade assigned to work with one or two of the native plants located on campus. Projects are student led, rather than pre-planned by teachers or staff, i.e. “wherever they choose to go” with the project, but incorporating the listed elements. It is a new way of learning in context, which eventually the students will share with others in presentations. V. Student Data Handout Reviewed 2-sided handout, “Enrollment Data”, attached. Emi inquired about past versus present capacity. Chad advised that the school has about the same enrollment as last year at 769, but that the school was designed for 550 so many of the special features such as spaces for art, media, etc. have had to be utilized for classrooms instead. April explained that the highest enrollment to date has been approximately 800 students. Scott inquired about what it means to be designed for a certain capacity. Chad explained the funding requirements and planning issues based on population projections for the area, which have already exceeded expectations and may require redistricting in the future. Chad advised as to safety issues with the higher enrollment, such as keeping recess safe given the large number of students on the field at the same time, and having persons on the field to monitor the students. Yukki inquired if the school has ever qualified as a Title I school, to which Chad replied, no, it has not, because the school does not have a high enough percentage of students in the poverty level category to qualify for Title I. VI. Future Meeting Dates & Discussion of September Agenda Agreed to hold SCC meetings for 2019-2020 on the 3rd Monday of each month starting September 16, 2019, with the exception of January and February due to holidays. The January meeting will be held January 13, 2020, and the February meeting will be held February 10, 2020, instead of the 3rd Monday of those months. VII. Student Lighthouse Reports Will start following elections. VIII. Public Testimony None Adjournment at 5:42 PM.
